What is EFT Tapping and TFT Tapping
Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Thought Field Therapy (TFT), often referred to as “tapping,” are evidence-based techniques that use psychological acupressure (read the research).
These methods involve tapping on specific points on the body while focusing on particular emotions or issues. They aim to alleviate psychological stress and pain by stimulating the body’s energy meridians — similar to those used in traditional Chinese medicine. Like acupuncture, but without the needles.
“Tapping is one of the most effective ways to create immediate and lasting change in your life.” — Gabrielle Bernstein
How EFT Tapping and TFT Tapping Work
EFT combines elements of cognitive therapy and exposure therapy with physical stimulation of acupuncture points. Here’s a basic outline of the process:
- Identify the Issue: Focus on a specific issue, whether it’s an emotional problem, physical pain, or stressful thought.
- Set a Statement: Create a setup statement that acknowledges the problem and expresses self-acceptance.
- Tapping Sequence: Tap on specific acupuncture points on the body while repeating a reminder phrase related to the issue.

How EFT Tapping Can Help You — FAQs
Why EFT Tapping Works
EFT works by addressing the body’s energy meridian system and reducing the emotional impact of memories or events that trigger distress. Here’s why it’s considered effective:
- Energy Flow: Balances chi or qi flow through meridians to relieve emotional distress.
- Acupressure: Tapping releases blockages in the body’s energy system to ease psychological tension.
- Psychological Exposure: Verbalising while tapping helps desensitise emotional triggers.
- Cognitive Shifts: Encourages new, more positive thoughts and beliefs.
- Neurobiological Effects: Calms the brain’s limbic system, reducing stress responses.
- Mind-Body Connection: Integrates cognitive and somatic healing for full emotional balance.
- Self-Empowerment: A self-help tool giving you control over emotional regulation.
What Can EFT Tapping Be Used For?
- Anxiety: General, social, and panic relief.
- Stress: Managing work, life, or event-related stress.
- Phobias: Fear of flying, heights, or spiders.
- Depression: Reduces emotional heaviness and lifts mood.
- Anger: Helps manage and diffuse outbursts.
- Trauma: Supports recovery from trauma and PTSD.
- Chronic Pain: Reduces physical tension and pain sensitivity.
- Addictions: Helps manage cravings and triggers.
- Weight Loss: Supports emotional eating awareness and control.
What Can TFT Tapping Be Used For?
- Anxiety & Stress: Reduces symptoms through targeted tapping sequences.
- Phobias & Trauma: Tailored algorithms calm emotional reactivity.
- Depression & Anger: Eases low mood and emotional tension.
- Grief & Loss: Supports healthy emotional processing.
- Addictions & Pain: Reduces cravings and discomfort.
- Confidence & Self-Esteem: Builds inner strength and self-worth.
- Performance & Sleep: Enhances focus, performance, and rest.
TFT uses specific tapping algorithms to balance the body’s energy system and provide relief for emotional or physical issues.
What Are the EFT Tapping Points?
The EFT tapping points are located on the face, upper body, and hands. These are stimulated with the fingertips while focusing on the issue to be addressed. TFT points are similar but vary depending on the specific algorithm used for each condition.
How Often Should You Use EFT Tapping?
The frequency depends on your needs, but consistency is key:
- Daily Practice: For chronic stress, anxiety, or emotional regulation.
- As Needed: For acute triggers or cravings.
- Before/After Events: To manage anxiety around presentations or challenges.
- Short Sessions: 5–10 minutes morning or night maintains calm.
- Specific Goals: Focused daily practice when targeting a particular issue.
How Many EFT & TFT Sessions Do I Need?
Every client is different, but most people learn the process and feel confident using it within 1–3 sessions. Follow-up or top-up sessions can further personalise your tapping approach.
Can EFT Tapping Be Done Without Words?
Yes. EFT can be practised silently, which may be useful if words are hard to find. This meditative version still calms the body and mind. At My Bondi Hypnotherapist, I often blend both verbal and non-verbal tapping to match your comfort and goals.
Where Did EFT Tapping Originate?
TFT Tapping — Thought Field Therapy
Developed by Dr. Roger Callahan in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Thought Field Therapy (TFT) blends traditional psychology with Eastern medicine’s meridian system. TFT uses gentle tapping on specific acupressure points while focusing on the problem (thoughts, emotions, memories) to rebalance the body’s energy and ease psychological distress.
TFT has evolved over decades and inspired modern tapping methods. It’s used to address anxiety, trauma, fears, and unhelpful thought patterns — helping restore emotional stability and resilience without being invasive.
EFT Tapping — Emotional Freedom Technique
In the 1990s, Gary Craig developed Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) as a streamlined version of TFT. Drawing on his training in NLP, EFT introduced simple “setup” and “reminder” phrases to guide tapping through a standardised sequence.
EFT aims to calm the nervous system, reduce the emotional intensity of difficult memories, and support changes in beliefs and behaviours. Many clients use EFT for stress, anxiety, phobias, trauma, anger, and physical discomfort as part of a natural, skills-based approach to wellbeing.
